Book Review: Sociology and Understanding Iranian Society: The Perspective of Proper Configuration Between Civil Society, State, and Economy

Hamzeh Nozari's (2021) book, Sociology and Understanding Iranian Society: The Perspective of Proper Configuration Between Civil Society, State, and Economy, attempts to move beyond the traditional dichotomies of "less state–more market" and "Iranian despotism." Instead, it proposes a model based on a "proper configuration" among the three institutions of state, market, and civil society. This review critically evaluates the explanatory power and practical feasibility of this proposed framework in light of the historical and structural realities of contemporary Iran. Employing a descriptive-analytical method with a critical approach, this paper examines the book's structural organization, theoretical foundations, and historical applications. While the book achieves significant theoretical progress by emphasizing the role of civil society, it exhibits notable limitations: the absence of a coherent historical analysis of the Pahlavi and post-revolutionary eras, an ahistorical critique of Mossadegh's government, and ambiguity regarding the practical implications of its framework. Furthermore, the author's proposed alternative (radical democracy) suffers from an "institutional void" analysis and an epistemic blindness toward material power relations. The principal merit of the book lies in opening new theoretical horizons for re-examining the relationships among the state, market, and civil society. However, due to the lack of a grounded historical analysis and an actionable roadmap, the book's core argument remains at the level of an abstract ideal; a matter that itself represents one of the most significant obstacles to "directed social change" in contemporary Iran.
