[English]

Background and Aim: Young people's health lifestyles emerge from the interplay of socio-cultural structures, cultural norms, and individual agency, continuously shaped by social and cultural changes during the transition to adulthood. Disparities in resource access and consumption patterns between urban and rural environments further differentiate these health behaviors. Grounded in Cockerham's Health Lifestyle Theory, this study examined the role of cultural beliefs and norms in shaping the health lifestyles of youth in Fars Province.

Data and Method: A descriptive-analytical approach and survey design was employed. Using multistage cluster sampling, 3,115 young individuals aged 18–35 (48.8% female, 50.8% male) in Fars Province were selected. Data were gathered via a researcher-made health beliefs scale and a Cockerham-based questionnaire assessing ten health dimensions, including nutrition, physical activity, substance use, and stress management.

Findings: The results revealed that the mean overall healthy lifestyle score across the sample was at a low-to-moderate level, being significantly higher among females and urban residents compared to males and rural residents (p < 0.05). Cultural beliefs and norms demonstrated significant relationships with all dimensions of healthy lifestyle except physical activity. Furthermore, experiencing illness did not necessarily alter unhealthy beliefs and, in certain cases, even reinforced them.

Conclusion: The findings underscore the critical need for culturally tailored educational interventions, targeted health programs for young men, the active engagement of women as community health facilitators, and interactive strategies designed to challenge and modify unhealthy beliefs.

Key Message: Healthy lifestyles among youth in Fars Province are shaped by cultural beliefs, norms, and social environments, with urban youth and women exhibiting healthier patterns than rural youth and men. The persistence of certain unhealthy beliefs, even after illness, indicates that changing health behaviours requires culturally sensitive, interactive interventions tailored to urban and rural contexts, rather than simple information dissemination.
