[English]

Background and Aim: The meaning of motherhood undergoes continuous transformation and redefinition throughout a woman's life cycle. Modern maternal experiences have increasingly departed from traditional frameworks, becoming individualized phenomena shaped by contemporary socio-cultural conditions. This study aims to explore the changing meaning of motherhood across the life cycle of one-child mothers.

Data and Method: Adopting a qualitative thematic analysis approach, data were collected in the fall of 2024 through in-depth interviews with 24 one-child mothers aged 20–35 in Lahijan, selected via purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Smith’s six-stage thematic analysis technique.

Findings: Three main themes emerged across the maternal life cycle: 1) Pre-pregnancy: “Sweet Dreamlike Motherhood: An Idealized Image Before Experiencing Pregnancy,” derived from the core categories of “positive feelings” and the “desire to become a mother”. 2) During pregnancy: “Pregnancy as a Re-creation of Motherhood: From Mental Ideal to Lived Experience,” emerging from bittersweet feelings and the need for social support”. 3) Post-pregnancy: “The Boundlessness of Motherhood: An Irreversible and Endless Journey Between Sweetness and Hardship,” comprising categories such as mother-centeredness and spouse withdrawal, feelings of satisfaction and failure, perpetual responsibility, self-sacrifice, acting as a barrier and catalyst for growth, and ongoing support needs.

Conclusion: Women’s understanding of motherhood shifts dynamically throughout the life cycle. In Lahijan, motherhood emerges not merely as a biological state, but as a reflective, socio-cultural project through which meaning is constructed, identity is reshaped, and negotiations with gendered norms take place.

Key Message: Public media and policy frameworks should shift from framing motherhood solely as a sacrificial role to a reciprocal experience requiring structural support. Aligning social policies with contemporary women’s realities and institutionalizing paternal involvement in child-rearing are vital to reducing maternal strain and restructuring traditional parenting roles.
